CG Shikshyalaya - Chaudhary Foundation
On April 25, 2015, a 7.9-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal — the largest in over 80 years — and killed nearly 9,000 people, injured over 22,000 and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless. Though the earthquakes’ epicenters were located in the Sindulpolchouk and Gorkha districts, 35 of the 75 districts in Nepal were impacted — destroying around 9,000 schools and over 30,000 classrooms.
This project supports SDGs:
CG Shikshyalaya, which was started after the earthquake and alongside CG Ashraya, was a reconstruction project that created transitional educational facilities in the hardest-hit areas. The structures of the schools were designed to follow earthquake-resistant guidelines and were built using locally-sourced materials.
Unlike Ashraya’s transitional homes, CG Shikshyalaya’s construction was outsourced to international contractors to ensure that the schools would open quickly. Each school took less than one month to build and cost under $10,000 USD. Over 40 schools for were built across 10 districts — impacting the lives of 6,000 students.
